TO THE RESCUE: A Ghanaian man with a suspected brain haemorrhage was rescued from an oil rig by an East London team and airlifted to a Port Elizabeth hospital early yesterday.

DESPERATE MEASURES: An AV8 Aviation helicopter has so far dumped about 40000 litres of water on the fire raging out of control in the Kubusi forests near Stutterheim. Gous said the fire was burning wildly on the northern borders of the forest and all available resources were in place in an effort to prevent it from spreading.

Stricken trawler waits to be towed

RESCUE TEAM: Private rescue services from East London, AV8 and Airhart, lowered divers onto the deck of Kuswag One off Port St Johns yesterday during an operation to free the tug's propellers from a towline. "We dropped two divers beside the Kuswag and lowered their gear onto the tug in six trips," AV8 pilot Brian Katz said. With the help of Airhart, the helicopter was fitted with a flotation device in one hour instead of the usual six hours.

Helicopter training for two formerly disadvantaged pupils

The sky is the limit for two matriculants from formerly disadvantaged backgrounds who will become helicopter pilots. Training of 200 hours to instructor level is being offered by local businessman Brian Katz of AV8 helicopters following a discretionary grant of just over R1 million from the Transport Sector Education and Training Authority (Seta).

Reach for A Dream volunteer Pat Williams said the children had "absolutely loved" the trip. "They were very quiet after the ride but once they got back to Frere Hospital and back with their friends, they were ecstatic."

Sick seaman whisked to St Dominic's

A seaman from Johannesburg was yesterday airlifted off a ship, the FPSD Falcon, 8km off Bonza Bay after he developed kidney problems. Katz said AV8 helicopters have been involved in a number of rescue operations in the province, including taking to hospital two field researchers attacked near Hamburg about three weeks ago.

EC starts helicopter emergency service

Crucial to saving lives is saving time. This is the message from the Eastern Cape Health Department, which has embarked on an emergency air services pilot project from November 1 to April 30.Brian Katz of AV8 Helicopters said he has two Alouette helicopters on 24-hour standby -- one in East London and the other in Umtata. "Both will cover a 108 kilometre radius and be able to reach most areas in 30 to 40 minutes."

Cricket brings boom to East London

AV8 Helicopters, Smokey Swallows restaurant and Holiday Inn Garden Court are just a few of the businesses to have benefited. AV8 owner Brian Katz said his helicopter flew commentators and members of the Indian media around East London for about an hour. “This was great exposure for the city as the cricket is (broadcast to) over 500 million Indians.” he said.
